2023 Food Bank Benchmarks

When was the last "normal" year of fundraising for food banks? Since 2019, food banks have navigated a government shutdown, a global pandemic and inflation. Each of these events have had a major impact on communities across the U.S. - and the food banks who serve them.

RKD Group examined data from 77 of our food bank clients across the U.S. to better understand how these events have shaped the food bank fundraising landscape. The detailed results in this report will be beneficial for strategic planning throughout the remainder of the year.

Key takeaways

Food banks are stronger post-COVID

Revenue in 2022 was still DOUBLE pre-pandemic levels.

Performance trends were similar across regions and size

Organizations that invested during the pandemic were able to maximize fundraising opportunities in 2022.

2020 and 2021 represent significant performance outliers

While pandemic performance levels can't be sustained, it doesn't mean giving should return to pre-pandemic levels either.

Retention should be watched closely

Transition donor retention was down 17.6% year over year.
